En esta segundo conferencia, P. Joan expone que, a diferencia de otros pueblos, Israel de Dios responde a la revelación mediante la ascesis entendida como servicio. Israel sale de Egipto al desierto para servir al Dios Vivo. Recibe la Ley y erige el templo donde los levitas y el pueblo sirven a Dios, constituyéndose en Su portavoz ante las naciones. Del monoteísmo ético del Antiguo Testamento, Cristo se encarna para servir. De ahí el llamamiento a servir a los demás, como Él ha venido a servir, y la Iglesia, Su Cuerpo místico, está para servir al mundo. In this second podcast, Fr Joan explains that, unlike other civilations and belief systems, Israel responds to God through ascesis understood as service. Going into the wilderness, Israel must depart Egypt in order to serve the Living God. Once it receives the Law, Israel builds the Temple where the Levites and the people minister unto God, becoming His herald unto the nations. In the midst of this Old Testament ethical monotheism, Christ becomes incarnate in order to serve. Hence, His call to us to serve others, as He Himself has come to serve. And as the Church, His Mystical Body, must serve the world.

¿Cómo es que hablan Dios y el hombre mediante el fenómeno misterioso que llamamos la revelación? El momento y lugar de la revelación, ya no es cronológico ni geográfico, no es un pueblo, una etnia ni una geografía. El corazón del hombre es el suelo de revelación trinitaria. En esta primera de tres conferencias, P. Joan examina ciertas características de la concepción del “tiempo” del pueblo de Israel que nos ayudarán a adentrarnos en el misterio de la revelación de Dios. How does God converse with man in the awesome mystery we call revelation? The time-space of revelation is not chronological, nor geographical. Nor is it limited to a people, a race or a geography. The heart of man becomes the sacred ground of Trinitarian revelation. In this first of three podcasts, Fr Joan examines certain traits of ancient Israel’s conception of "time" which Orthodox Christians must assimilate in order to begin our study of the mystery of God's revelation.

Para entender que significan términos como “Palabra de Dios” o “Verbo de Dios”, Padre Joan, nos explica el doble valor, noético y dinámico, del vocablo hebreo “dabar”. Por una parte, el sustantivo masculino דָּבָר “dabar” (palabra) es la expresión de pensamientos, intenciones, proyectos, decisiones; es el discurso inteligible que ilumina el sentido de los acontecimientos; es el nombre de la realidad en cuanto inteligible. Por otra parte, el verbo דָּבַר “dabar” (decir) es una fuerza activa, una potencia que cumple lo que significa, realiza cuanto hay en el corazón, y su eficacia es más grande cuanto más poderosa es la voluntad que la engendra, o más profunda es la fuente de dónde brota. In this third of three podcasts, Father Joan explains the noetic and dynamic distinctions implicit in the Hebrew word "DABAR" On the one hand, “DABAR” is a masculine noun דָּבָר (“word”). It is the expression of thoughts, intentions, plans, decisions, and speech which illuminates the meaning of events and names intelligible reality. On the other, the verb דָּבַר "DABAR" (“to say”) is an active force, a power that delivers what it means, that executes what is contained in the heart, and its effecacy is greater the greater the will is of He who engenders it or the deeper the wellspring.

El estudio del profetismo, nos supone ir más allá de los libros de las Sagradas Escrituras. En todo caso, Padre Joan deja claro que el a priori ortodoxo para la lectura de las Escrituras, es siempre la lectura en Iglesia que, como dicen los Padres, evita sin duda los riesgos de que la Palabra de Dios (DABAR YHWH) pierda algo del dinamismo que disfrutaba en boca de los profetas. La actualización y su aplicación a las nuevas situaciones de la historia de la salvación, comporta la re-lectura constante de la Tradición, el discernimiento inteligente y, sobre todo, a la luz del Espíritu Santo, el discernimiento santo. Our theological reflection on divine prophecy requires more than a textual criticism of the books of Scripture. In this second of three podcasts, Father Joan defines the Orthodox a priori for understanding Scripture: its reading in Church. Such a reading, according to the Fathers, stands as a bulwark against the risk of the DABAR YHWH losing the dynamism it enjoyed in the mouth of the prophets, so that our theological reflection may become an “actualizing” and applying of the Word of God to each new situation which arises, requiring a contant rereading of tradition, careful discernment and above all godly insight in the light of the Holy Spirit.

No podremos entender los Profetas si no entendemos qué es la revelación. De la manera en que nos ha llegado el relato de la revelación, observamos que se producen “momentos de tensión” en el sentido del fenómeno denominado por los Padres theandrismo, momentos en que Dios habla al hombre y el hombre habla con Dios, una tensión que también significa Pascua. En las tres próximas conferencias, Padre Joan habla de los “momentos de tensión” de la historia de la revelación, destacando en tres periodos históricos, diferentes modos de recepción y de articulación de la Palabra de Dios (DABAR YHWH). To understand the prophets, one should reflect on what revelation is. Salvation history has come down to us in different ways. Father Joan calls these "moments of tension" when God speaks to man and man speaks to God: what the Fathers called theandrism or a tension which we can experience as Pascha. In the next three podcasts, Father Joan talks about these "moments of tension" in the history of revelation, highlighting three distinct historical periods, or different modes of reception and articulation of the DABAR YHWH.
