On Saturday, April 12, 2008, St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary welcomed Orthodox faithful who came from parishes all around New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York for inspiration and ideas on how to have an energized parish. The 2008 SVS Lenten Retreat’s theme was The Energized Parish: Clergy and Laity together and was led by Fr Constantine Nasr from St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Church in Oklahoma City. (SVS ‘73).

St John Chrysostom as Homilist

A talk given at St. Vladimir's Seminary on January 30th, 2008, the Feast of the Three Hierarchs, as part of a Symposium on St John Chrysostom which wrapped up a year-long commemoration of the 1600th anniversary of his repose. Dr. Margaret Mitchell addressed St John Chrysostom as homilist. With her own new translation of one of St. John’s sermons on 2 Corinthians 4:13, the Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School discussed the structure and content to show how St John communicated his profound and practical message. She particularly highlighted St. John’s emphasis on the importance, even necessity, of alms giving. “His teachings almost always communicate an exhortation to care for the poor and needy,” said Dr Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell is Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature in the University of Chicago’s Divinity School and author of The Heavenly Trumpet: John Chrysostom and the Art of Pauline Interpretation

A talk given at St. Vladimir's Seminary on January 30th, 2008, the Feast of the Three Hierarchs as part of a Symposium on St John Chrysostom, which wrapped up a year-long commemoration of the 1600th anniversary of the his repose. Igumen Gregory Woolfenden, Ph.D., focused on St John’s liturgical thinking as expressed in his sermons. Fr Gregory is pastor of St Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in New Britain, Connecticut and serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Liturgical Studies at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School. He is also author of Daily Liturgical Prayer: Origins and Theology.

A talk given at St. Vladimir's Seminary on January 30th, 2008, the Feast of the Three Hierarchs as part of a Symposium on St John Chrysostom, which wrapped up a year-long commemoration of the 1600th anniversary of the his repose. The Very Reverend Josiah Trenham, pastor of St Andrew’s Orthodox Church in Riverside, California spoke about St John Chrysostom and his teachings on married life. Fr Josiah read excerpts of texts where St John described the ideal Christian married and family life and "fleshed out" St John’s teachings on the differences in mankind’s state before the fall, after the fall, and in the Kingdom of Heaven, and how those differences affect the experience of marriage. His book on "Marriage and Virginity according to St John Chrysostom" is scheduled to be published later this year.

A talk given at the Seminary's 25th Annual Fr. Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture. His Grace Bishop Basil of Wichita and Mid-America of the Antiochian Archdiocese (SVS 1973) has been serving as a bishop since 1992 at St George Cathedral in Wichita, KS. Bishop Basil is also the compiler and English translator of The Liturgikon: the book of Divine Services for the priest and deacon (1989). Orthodox Education Day 2007

On Saturday, October 6, 2007, St Vladimir's Seminary welcomed hundreds of guests who traveled to the seminary's campus for this year’s Orthodox Education Day. It was a full day of prayer, fellowship, good food, and educational workshops as participants explored this year's theme: "Our Church: Her Mission and Her Future.” One of the highlights of the day was the keynote address by Fr Chad Hatfield, SVS Chancellor and CEO. Fr Chad spoke on the topic of Our Mission Today, challenging his audience to consider the lives of the great Missionary Saints in America’s Orthodox history: St Herman, St Innocent, and St Tikhon – and how they call us to bear witness to the truth of the Gospel today. His address was immediately followed by a panel discussion with representatives of mission work in the Antiochian Archdiocese, Greek Archdiocese and OCA. Fr Chad moderated, taking questions from the floor addressed to Fr Eric Tosi (OCA), Fr Gregory MacGregor (Antiochian Archdiocese) and Fr James Kordaris (Greek Archdiocese).
